Puzzling Magenta Slime on Remote Tasmanian Coast Prompts Fears of Possible Phytoplankton Proliferation

Agencies in Tasmania are working to identify a pink slime that has surfaced on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers concerned it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.

Extensive Appearance Along Beaches

The magenta-hued slime was found on a portion of Randalls Bay about 60km south of Hobart. A similar sludge has also been noted on parts of Little Roaring Beach and a separate bay.

Samples Collected for Analysis

Specimens have been taken and sent to the Environment Protection Authority for testing. A spokesperson commented that "algae outbreaks are a normal phenomenon in response to changes in nutrients, heat, rainfall or light".

"They are at times called crimson or rosy tides because the proliferations can color the water crimson," the representative said. "Few algal blooms are dangerous, with many species functioning as a primary source of energy for animals in the marine food web."

"The primary reason of crimson tides in Tasmanian waters is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause glowing light shows at night."

Rising Frequency Associated with Global Warming
