Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is not expected to be ended soon.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. “Starting next week, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to block the administration from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the administration to disclose details on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been brought back to execute layoffs.

A report argued that a funding lapse restricts the authority of the government to carry out firings, referencing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the end of September but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate said. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
